OutKast In a rap world predominately focused on the Coasts, Southern-fried rap duo OutKast, who burst onto the scene in 1994 with their first single, "Player's Ball," helped draw attention to the raw talent going unnoticed in the heart of the nation.
The Atlanta natives, Andre Benjamin (Dre) and Antwan Patton (Big Boi), met while attending Tri-Cities High School in East Point, Ga. Starting out as rivals, the two rappers eventually decided to team up and soon caught the attention of Organized Noize Productions, the producers behind hits for TLC and Xscape. OutKast signed with LaFace Records and released "Player's Ball," followed closely by their debut album, the immensely titled Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik. With its deep-funk groove and sample-free production, the group started to turn heads and the records went platinum.
