Jabari Smith: The Return

Kings forward Jabari Smith is just happy to be getting a shot.

After two solid seasons at Louisiana State, Smith is enjoying his time as an NBA player. Smith is currently on his second stint with the Kings after being drafted by Sacramento in the second round (45th overall) in 2000. He played just nine games his rookie season (2000-01) and 12 more before being waived in 2001-2002.

After playing the remainer of his sophomore season in Philadelphia, Smith signed with the Kings this past summer as a free agent. And despite having limited action the floor, Smith is having the time of his life.

"I've been real blessed," Smith, 26, said. "I really have nothing to complain about."

A player with a 6-11, 253-pound frame, Smith was among the most sought-after prospects in the country. He spent his first two seasons at Atlanta Metropolitan Junior College, where he averaged 17.5 points and 12.5 rebounds per game. He then received letters from over 100 Division I schools, including all SEC and ACC schools. But when it came to LSU, it became a no brainer.

"I was pretty much recruited by everybody," Smith said. "(But at LSU), the only big man they had was 6-6. (My decision) had nothing to do with academics or anything like that. Their tallest player was 6-6. You don't have to be a rocket scientist to figure that one out."

Smith had two solid seasons with the Tigers but probably enjoyed his senior season the most. In the 1999-2000 campaign, he averaged 12.5 points, 7.0 rebounds and 2.2 assists in starting all 34 games. He led the Tigers to a share of the SEC title with a 12-4 record and was named to the All-SEC Second Team.

Although every college player has a dream of making it to the NBA, Smith insists that wasnt on his mind as his college career drew to a close.

"I knew I had a shot," Smith said. "But I wasn't really concentrating on that. We were winning too many games at the time. We were winning big in the SEC. Sometimes, (getting drafted) crosses your mind. But you're always going to be thinking about winning before you think about the NBA. That was the best time of my life."

Along with adapting to the bigger, stronger and faster play of the NBA, Smith has also had to adapt to the team's constant road trips. Going from city to city, playing from arena to arena. That would be the best way Smith can describe the league.

"A lot of traveling," he said. "I pretty much see it as a dream world. I can't do anything but enjoy myself. Because I know in the summertime and this life (as an NBA player), it's two different worlds. Hell yeah, I'm enjoying it."

"It's a good life, man," he added. "I have no complaints. Sometimes I might have a couple. But we're all paid, we're all blessed and we all have the same common goals."

Smith added during the offseason he spends his summer playing PlayStation and spending time with his family.

"That's it," Smith laughed. "And barbecuing. Nobody can touch my grill."
