It's Official: Classic NES Series

All of the details on Nintendo's upcoming retro packs!

It's been rumored and speculated on for weeks, but today Nintendo has exclusively revealed to us the details on the US equivelant of the Famicom Mini series.

The collection will be called Classic NES Series, and will begin as a limited edition NES Game Boy Advance SP as well as a line-up of eight classic games released during the Nintendo Entertainment System days of nearly 20 years ago.

The NES Game Boy Advance SP will feature a very unique color scheme that matches the original NES controller's look. It will, of course, play any Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance game.

Nintendo will release eight games for starters, all accurately emulating the NES games from the mid 80s: Donkey Kong, Pac-Man, The Legend of Zelda, Super Mario Bros., Excitebike, Ice Climber, Xevious, and Bomberman. Each game in the series will be priced at $19.99, and will be packaged in a standard Game Boy Advance box featuring the classic artwork of the original game.

"I mean, Donkey Kong and Pac-Man? These are, like, the best games ever," says Perrin "Mallrat" Kaplan, Nintendo of America's vice president, marketing and corporate affairs. "And if you aren't just dying to get your hands on the gnarly new Classic NES Limited Edition GBA SP, you're a total dweeb." Yep, that's a real quote, folks.

The games and system will launch on June 7th in the US.

New Limited Edition SP

Nintendo, again, goes back to its past to produce another Limited Edition handheld.

In a move that surprises no one, Nintendo will unleash another limited edition Game Boy Advance SP system. And much like the upcoming NES Game Boy Advance SP system set for release on June 7th, this system is aimed at the half dozen or so people who remember another Nintendo videogame system released in the early 90s.

The Virtual Boy Game Boy Advance SP system will be released to coincide with the Virtual Boy's ninth anniversary since its US launch and miserable death in the US. The system will best mimic the original system's red-on-top, black-on-bottom color design. Similar to if Nintendo grafted a Flame SP top to an Onyx SP bottom.

The Virtual Boy Game Boy Advance SP will also have the standard color LCD removed, in favor of a specially produced front lit TFT LCD screen that can handle 256 shades of red. Every game produced for the Game Boy Advance will only play in red on the Virtual Boy Game Boy Advance SP system, accurately portraying the graphics capability of the Virtual Boy system.

Nintendo will also release the Classic Virtual Boy collection for the Game Boy Advance on specially manufactured Red and Black GBA cartridges. The games will play as if they were on the Virtual Boy system, without the need to shove your face into a goofy looking visor. The 3D effect can only be emulated with two copies of the game, two systems, a link cable, and the ability to cross your eyes as if looking at one of those Magic Eye paintings that were the rage in the 90s.

Even though the smallest GBA cartridge can hold multiple Virtual Boy games, the Classic Virtual Boy series will be packaged one game per cartridge at a retail price of ten dollars more than the standard GBA price, so as not to pollute the already flooded eBay resellers' market.

"[The Virtual Boy] died before its time," said a Nintendo representative, who asked to remain anonymous due to the potential flogging he would receive if someone heard that he actually liked the Virtual Boy. "The system had so much to offer kids with fully developed eyesight over the age of seven. So many classics! Like....uh, Nester's Funky Bowling. And Red Alarm. Red hot sellers that broke the hundreds of copies mark back in 1995. Get it? Red hot?"

The apocryphal Virtual Boy Game Boy Advance will launch for $199.99. It will quickly drop in price to $99.99, then $49.99, eventually hitting clearance aisles and outlet stores for $29.99 before disappearing into obscurity six months after its release.

Wireless Adapter Comes to the US

Nintendo will launch the wireless link for the GBA this September.

Nintendo has announced that the wireless adapter will be released in the US this September. It will come packaged with the English language versions of Pokemon: Fire Red and Leaf Green when they ship in September.

The Wireless Adapter will also be supported in Mario Golf Advance Tour, set for release on June 28th. Unlike the Japanese release of the game, the US version will not have the adapter packed in.

The Wireless Adapter allows for several Game Boy Advance systems to communicate with each other without the use of a link cable. It can link systems as far as 30 meters away.

Two Mario Games for GBA

Nintendo reveals two new games to feature the plumber mascot for 2004.

In Nintendo's new product list released today, two previously unannounced Mario games have popped up into existence.

Due out by the end of this year is a Game Boy Advance version of Nintendo's popular Mario Party franchise. Nintendo previously released a Mario Party card game for use with the GBA e-Reader peripheral, but it appears that this upcoming title will be a full-fledged GBA design.

Also due out by the end of 2004 is Mario Pinball. Again, no details were revealed about this title, but we assume it will be as deep and detailed a pinball game as what the company released as Pokemon Pinball: Ruby & Sapphire late last year.

These games will be revealed at this year's Electronic Entertainment Expo. We'll have full details and first screens when they make their debut.

Game Boy Advance Games I Want: Previews

Mario and Donkey Kong

Release Date: May 24, 2004
Mario and his original nemesis team up again in this Game Boy Advance action game. There is now news about this game, but there are many pictures of it.

New Zelda

Release Date: TBA 2004

In an hour-long interview with Dutch videogame journalists, Nintendo game designers Shigeru Miyamoto and Eiji Aonuma confirmed that a whole new Zelda game for Game Boy Advance is already well underway.

The interview, conducted by Jurjen Tiersma and Niels 't Hooft mainly focused on the different aspects of Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker for GameCube, which will be launched in Europe on May 3 and the US on March 25, 2003. On a side-note, Miyamoto told that the new GBA adventure would once again be developed by Capcom, under supervision of Nintendo's Japanese EAD team. Capcom also helmed the development on the last two Game Boy Color Zelda titles, Oracle of Seasons and Oracle of Ages and the GBA port and enhancement of the SNES hit, A Link to the Past. Development of this as of yet untitled new game started as early as 2001, but was temporary put on hold to secure resources for development of The Four Swords, the multiplayer component of the GBA version of A Link to the Past.

A whole new Zelda on Nintendo's 32-bit handheld means good news for mobile gamers with an urge for truly new content. Not counting the multiplayer-only The Four Swords, the GBA has yet to see its first original installment in Nintendo's flagship Mario and Zelda series. Though not confirmed by Nintendo, the new Zelda GBA game will most likely make its public debut at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) in Los Angeles, May 2003.

Mr. Miyamoto concluded the interview with a promise to Nintendo fans waiting for more title announcements for both GBA and GameCube: "We have many new games for you at E3!"

Metroid: Zero Mission
Metroid: Zero Mission
, the follow-up to Metroid Fusion for the Game Boy Advance. Based loosely on the original NES maps, Metroid: Zero Mission includes all of the weapons and environments from the original game, and also provides a totally new experience for the series' many fans by adding new enhancements and delving deeper into aspects of the story that haven't been told.

Worms 3

Release Date: TBA 2004

Activision announced its got a hand full of Worms, Worms 3 to be exact. The Santa Monica publisher snagged the rights to publish the goofy strategy game (which Ubi Soft has published for so long) as well as an additional yet-to-be-announced Worms title.

The company acquired the multi-platform worldwide publishing and distribution rights, excluding PC rights in Korea, Taiwan and China. Worms 3 ships in 2004.

"We are thrilled to be introducing Worms onto the next-generation console systems," said Kathy Vrabeck, executive vice president, global publishing and brand management for Activision. "The franchise has sold more than seven million units worldwide since its inception in 1995. Worms' unique humor, instant playability and addictive gameplay have remained popular across two generations of hardware with the franchise appearing on almost every platform. Now delivered in 3D, the game is sure to be even more popular than its predecessors drawing in a new generation of gamers around the globe."

"With Worms 3, we have the opportunity to strengthen an already powerful franchise and provide the definitive gaming experience within the Worms universe," adds Debbie Bestwick, commercial director of Team 17. "We look forward to forging a long-term future for the Worms franchise with Activision, a company well known for its ability to develop properties in a creative and forward-thinking fashion."

Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy Kong's Quest

Release Date: Spring 2004

The sequel, a port of the Super NES game, follows Diddy Kong and Dixie Kong as they work through new environments to rescue Donkey Kong, kidnapped by K. Rool. There will be more than 30 levels to romp through, as well as a handful of additional challenges. DK Attack mode challenges players to complete each level from the main game in as quick a time as they can. Also returning are Funky's Fishing and Candy's Dance Studio, which can be played either solo or with a friend using the Game Boy Advance Game Link Cable.

It's Mr. Pants

Release Date: Spring 2004
I don't know what it is, and I don't know if it's going to be any good. And you know what? I don't care. It's next season's big surprise from Rare...the company's avoided the question every time someone asks. I just want the mystery to be solved.

Mario Golf: Advance Tour

Release Date: TBA 2004
This one's been a long time coming. The Game Boy Advance version will link up with the GameCube game in some fashion, most likely doing the same "transfer character" element that the original N64 and Game Boy Color versions had...just on a much more interactive level.

Super Mario Advance
Super Mario Advance is really two games in one: a souped-up version of Super Mario Bros. 2 and an action-packed four-player version of the original Mario Bros. arcade game. In Super Mario Bros. 2, you get to control either Mario, Luigi, Peach or Toad in a vegetable-flinging platform game filled with fantastic enemies. In the classic Mario Bros. game, you can either play alone or compete against three friends in a fast, hilarious battle. It's a great way to break in your new Game Boy Advance!

Super Mario World: Super Mario Advance 2
Super Mario World is the fourth game in the Super Mario Bros. series. The game was originally released on the Super Nintendo a decade ago, serving as a pack-in for the system. In many ways, the game is merely a refinement and expansion of the concepts introduced to the series in Super Mario Bros. 3. Still, the game served as an excellent way to usher in Nintendo's new system. Now, Nintendo is cashing in on its past successes by delivering a version of its amazing platformer for the Game Boy Advance. The game holds up fabulously, and the slight modifications that Nintendo has made to the game for its handheld release make it even better.

Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3
For most of the 1980s, there really wasn't such a thing as "prerelease hype" in the video game industry. But that all changed with Super Mario Bros. 3, which not only packed a strong print and television campaign in the US, but had the promotional help of The Wizard, a video-game-themed motion picture that promised frothing young gamers a peek at the next installment in Nintendo's masthead series, before its release. The hype may have been manufactured, but it turned out the game more than deserved it. It delivered interesting new tweaks to the fundamental platformer formula that the original Super Mario Bros. had staked out, and it created the single largest, most fully-realized Mario world that had been seen up to that point. Nintendo has now repackaged and gussied up SMB3 for its GBA release as Super Mario Advance 4, updating the graphics and throwing in a few bonuses. The result is a package that is, more often than not, true to the original game, which still stands up as a rock-solid platformer 14 years after its original release.

Super Monkey Ball Jr.
Few games can boast a concept as simple as that found in Sega's Super Monkey Ball series. Monkeys are trapped inside of spherical balls that allow them to roll around like marbles. These monkey marbles are stuck high in the air atop a lofty maze. Your job is to roll the monkey to the goal at the end of the maze before the time limit elapses and without falling off the edges of the maze. It's pretty easy, in theory. For as simple as it sounds, however, rolling the monkey to the goal is not an easy task. But it sure is a lot of fun.

Double Dragon Advance
Double Dragon Advance retells the story of Billy and Jimmy Lee. The premise of the game is simple: Billy's girlfriend is kidnapped by thugs, and he and his brother intend to get her back by any means necessary. "Any means necessary" in this case means by punching and kicking dozens of thuggish gang members. Experts in martial arts, Billy and Jimmy have more than just punches and kicks at their disposal, though. They can use elbow strikes, head butts, throws, jump kicks, and a variety of other moves to deal with the superior number of enemies out to get them.

Double Dragon Advance is clearly inspired by the original arcade version of Double Dragon as well as its sequel and features redone graphics and sound that nonetheless are very reminiscent of the graphical style found in the 1987 classic. At the same time, this new game features a number of new moves, enemies, weapons, and locations--and even some great-looking cutscenes featuring nice full-screen artwork and some snappy dialogue. Double Dragon Advance of course also features optional two-player simultaneous gameplay, as well as a unique gameplay mode in which you have control of both Billy and Jimmy and can toggle between directly controlling the two of them. Unfortunately, the player not under your direct control simply stands still--ideally, the AI would exercise at least some degree of control over your companion.

Crash Bandicoot Purple: Ripto's Revenge

Release Date: Q2 2004
Crash will meet up with Spyro the Dragon in this cross-over platformer.

Spyro Orange: The Cortex Conspiracy

Release Date: Q2 2004
Spyro will team up with Crash Bandicoot in this action platformer.

Leveraging its library to extremes, VU Games said today it would double the pleasure of Crash Bandicoot and Spyro the Dragon fans. It is planning two Q2 releases on Game Boy Advance that place Crash and Spyro in each other's game.

Crash Bandicoot Purple: Ripto's Rampage and Spyro Orange: The Cortex Conspiracy are in development at Vicarious Visions, an upstate New York developer with a deep pedigree of muli-platform titles. The studio just released SpongeBob SquarePants for the GBA, and came in for kudos for the GBA version of Tony Hawk's Undergound.

Both Ripto's Rampage and The Cortex Conspiracy will support linked gameplay for up to four gamers as well as single-player mode. In their press release, VU Games was quick to point out the combined sales of both franchises since their release now tops 42 million units across all platforms.

Donkey Kong Country
This is a Game Boy Advance version of Donkey Kong Country for the SNES. In addition to the original game, Donkey Kong Country for the Game Boy Advance features two new minigames: Funky's fishing, which requires players to catch as many fish as possible within a given time limit, and Candy's dance studio, which is basically a simple rhythm game. Both minigames can be played with two players. Donkey Kong Country for the Game Boy Advance also includes character art, a stat tracker, the ability to save anywhere, and a Donkey Kong attack mode, in which a player's in-game performance is judged according to a number of different factors.

The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
This is a Game Boy Advance version of The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past for the SNES, one of the greatest Zelda games or any game for the matter. This game also supports the Game Boy Advance's multiplayer capabilities by incorporating a special four-player multiplayer mode called "the four swords." In this mode, the ultimate objective is to grab the greatest number of rupies possible, but at various points in the dungeon, players will have to work together in order to progress.

NBA Jam 2002
NBA Jam 2002 for the Game Boy Advance is Acclaim's seventh attempt to give the NBA Jam series a respectable showing on a handheld system. Due to a variety of questionable design choices, as well as a few omissions, it's certainly not going to appease jaded enthusiasts who're still searching for a perfect portable rendition of their favorite extreme basketball game. However, NBA Jam 2002 does manage to offer a satisfying dose of two-on-two, no-rules, full-court roundball, complete with large, well-animated players and irreverent announcer comments.
Speacial Features:

  • All 29 NBA teams and authentic arenas.
  • Over 140 NBA Superstars.
  • 2-on-2 arcade action with all new modes of gameplay including HORSE.
  • Unlock secret teams like the NBA Rookie Team and the All-NBA Team.
  • Featuring two Jam style courts: Beach and Street Jam.
  • Signature and special moves such as alley-oops, sky hooks and off the glass passes.
  • 6 modes of play: Season, Playoffs, Head to Head, Jam, Horse and Practice.

SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom
Based on the kids show, you are able to play as SpongeBob SquarePants, Patrick StarFish and Sandy Cheeks, each with their unique moves and abilities. You have to stop the evil Plankton's plans as you "tongue-board" down huge mountains, "underwear bungee jump" off tall cliffs or ride in a guided "cruise bubble", having as much fun as a hero can.

SpongeBob SquarePants: Revenge of the Flying Dutchman
Aye, mateys! SpongeBob is back in an all-new action game that's soaked to the gunwales with the full-fathom-five fry-cook's unique brand of silliness.

When the game begins, SpongeBob's pet snail, Gary, runs away. While following his slimy trail, you find a mysterious treasure chest. Inside lies the spirit of the Flying Dutchman, who sends you on a treasure hunt that will take you all over the pleasant burg of Bikini Bottom.

Using SpongeBob's bubble-blowing skills, you will search high and low for keys to treasure chests. Collecting special bubble bottles will give your bubbles special abilities. Some bubbles will carry you up to high ledges, while others will smash through walls. Choosing the right bubbles for each situation is the key to victory.

Along the way, you will encounter many of SpongeBob's fishy friends like Patrick, the simpleton sea star, and Squidward, the grumpy invertebrate. THQ has done a fine job capturing all the wacky humor of the SpongeBob SquarePants cartoon with sharp, colorful graphics.

SpongeBob SquarePants: SuperSponge
Based on the episode "Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy," SpongeBob Squarepants: SuperSponge tosses SpongeBob to the depths of Bikini Bottom, where Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy put him through a series of side-scrolling trials before they'll condescend to give him their autographs.

The 20-level adventure features zany quests, zanier weaponry and enemies that are still zanier. In the quests dept., SpongeBob must climb a tree by bouncing off bird's nests.

The five weapons include a Jellyfish Launcher and a Bubble Wand. Ka-razy power-ups like Spatulas and Underpants give SpongeBob extra lives. Enemies include Robotic Sub-Shark and the Flying Dutchman.

Game Boy Advance Games I Own: Reviews

Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga

I usually don't like RPG games but Mario games kick ass and this games does infact kick ass. It's kind of tough to switch between the "A" and "B" buttons, that is how you control Mario and Luigi at the same time, but it's still awesome. This game is just like Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, but better and Luigi is in it. Any fan of Mario or RPG should give this game a try.

Mario Kart: Super Circuit
I have always loved Mario Kart games and now I can play it on my GBA. This is a completly new Mario kart game with over 20 new trackes and you can even play with up to 4 players with only one game. This is a nice hand-held randishing of the Mario Kart game that you can play anywhere.

WarioWare Inc. Mega Microgame$

I was correct this is a weird game, but it is still fun and addicting. It has the strangest 3 second mini games that you can think of and once you beat a certain amount there is a boss stage. The boss stage is basically just as strange as the mini games but you do not have a set time to beat it. There are also a bunch of game that are a bit longer than 3 seconds where you must answer a question. There are a bunch of different types of games such as sports and sci-fi, but my favorite would have to be classical. The classic mini games are just 3 second versions of sweet games like Metroid, Mario, and even Zelda. There are well over 200 mini games and some are better than others, but over all this is a good game. And the are some games that you can unlock such as Dr. Wario which is just like Dr. Mario, and many others.

Yoshi Island: Super Mario Advanced 3

This is a remake of the popular Super Nintendo game Yoshi Island: Super Mario World 2. This is a fun game and I enjoy playing it, but there is one leval I can't get past. There are many different worlds and each world has many levels and about two big bosses. In this game you play as Yoshi and you carry Mario on you back trying to reunite him with his brother, Luigi.

Metoid Fusion

This is a really fun game and it's basically just like all the other Metroid games, not including Metroid Prime, except with a different stoy. This time Samus gets infected by an X perisite, which almost kills her. Then she finds the antidote and she must destrore the X perisite before it hurts anyone else. The end guy is difficult, but I beat him so it is possible.

Wario Land 4

Wario Land 4 is like the other Wario games on Game Boy and I enjoyed playing it. Wario started out as a evil version of Mario, but he has sence evovled into just a fat, greedy, ugly guy. Wario games are always fun because even after you beat it you can continue to play because there are many secret thing to find. In this one you have to find a hidden CD in each level, I still haven't found them all so you know they are hidden pretty good.

Game and Watch Gallary 4

Game and Watch Gallary games are games with a collection of classic games. When I say classic I mean extremly old from the late 70's and early 80's. You can play the classic versions of the games or a newer version with Mario characters. And when you get high scores you can unlock new stuff.

Kirby Nightmare in Dream Land

This is the like other Kirby games and it was fun, but easy. I liked this game, but it could have been harder. I don't really have anything to say about this game so thats all I will say.
